KATHMANDU, DEC 13 - The Supreme Court on Friday issued a show cause notice in the name of government asking the latter to clarify the reasons behind the arrest of Bhagat Singh , the leader of Janatantrik Tarai Madhes Mukti Party (JTMMP)—an underground armed outfit.
A single bench of Justice Ram Kumar Prasad Sah asked the government to show up at the court with the letter of agreement that was signed with the outfit, within three days.
The court, in its show cause notice, has also asked the government to arrange a meeting between Singh, his family members and his lawyer.
Police had arrested Singh from Jamunha, nearby the town of Nepalgunj, along the Nepal-India border on November 29.
Though Singh and his party have given up arms following agreement with the government, state has not withdrawn the cases filed against them. JTMMP has been responsible for multiple bombings, extortion and murder in districts such as Banke, Bardiya and Dang.
After Singh's arrest, his son Mahesh Singh Sodhi had lodged a writ of habeas corpus arguing that the arrest was illegal.
Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction, Home Ministry, Police Headquarters and District Administration Office have been named as the defendants in the writ petition.
